The Northern Fjords

Beyond the Sognefjord lies Nordfjord and then the county, or fylke, of Møre og Romsdal. The coastal town of ålesund is renowned for its art nouveau architecture of turrets, towers and medieval motifs. Inland is the Geirangerfjord and its magnificent waterfalls. From ålesund, spectacular roads lead over the mountains to the town of Åndalsnes and the Romsdalsfjord. Along the coast farther north is the Atlantic Road, a highway linking a chain of islands. Northeast from here lies Trollheimen, the mountainous “Home of the Trolls,” and then comes the great expanse of Trondheimsfjorden and Trondheim itself - once called Nidaros - the ancient capital of Norway.

Beyond Trondheim is the narrowing edge of Norway's northwestern seaboard, fertile coastal lands backed by barren mountains that reach into Nordland and to the Arctic Circle. At Narvik, you look out across the waters of Vestfjorden to the spectacular Lofoten Islands before continuing north to Tromsø, known as “The Paris of the North.” You then go on through Finnmark, the land of the Saami people and of the midnight sun, to the Arctic island of Honningsvåg and Nordkapp (North Cape), the symbolic northern end of Europe.
