Traveling in Norway

Norway is a pleasant country in which to travel, but to enjoy this magnificent land you should be selective about how and where to explore. Roads are well maintained throughout. Good driving skills are required, however, where roads are narrow and twisting and where they pass through long tunnels. Norway's public transportation system is excellent.

This is a country that copes impressively with some of the most difficult winter conditions in Europe. Only in severe conditions are train services to the northwest likely to be curtailed. Buses serve more remote villages throughout the north and west. Travel by boat is a way of life in Norway, especially on the western seaboard. There is no finer way of touring Fjordland than by boat.
Most of Norway has a comparatively mild, wet, maritime climate. The west coast and mountains have high rainfall even in midsummer. But there can be long spells of fair weather, when Fjordland is glorious. In eastern and southeastern Norway, summers can be warm and dry. Winter in the higher elevations is cold and extremely snowy, creating excellent skiing conditions at Norway's winter resorts. The Norwegians are philosophical about their weather, preferring to think of it as invigorating.
