USEFUL WORDS AND PHRASES
There are two official, and similar forms of Norwegian. Riksmal, or Bokmal (“book language”), is an old form of Norwegian. Athough many bureaucrats speak in Bokmal, it is mostly used in its written form. Landsmal, or Nynorsk, has its roots in Old Norse dialects but developed out of the wave of Norwegian nationalism in the 19th century. You will encounter both during your stay; it is not uncommon for speakers to use a combination of both, but writing rarely mixes styles. Most people, especially the young, speak some English; alternatively, a knowledge of German will help. The phrases below are translated into Bokmal.
