MEDICAL INSURANCE
U.S. and Canadian visitors will be charged for emergency medical treatment, consultation with a doctor and/or admittance to a hospital (hospital). Ask at a tourist office or your hotel to find an English-speaking doctor.

DENTAL SERVICES
Dental treatment is charged for in Portugal. Ask at a tourist office or your hotel for a list of English-speaking dentists. Check that dental treatment is covered by your medical insurance.

SUN ADVICE
The sun is strong during summer, particularly in the south. Do not be deceived by the cooling breeze off the Atlantic. Avoid prolonged exposure and protect yourself with a sunscreen or cover up.

DRUGS
Prescription medicines are available from a pharmacy (fármacia), distinguished by a large green cross. Pharmacists can prescribe remedies for minor ailments, and many speak English. Information about the nearest late-night or 24-hour facility is posted at all pharmacies.

SAFE WATER
Tap water is generally safe, but does not always taste too pleasant. It is advisable to drink bottled water (agua mineral), especially in rural areas; sem gas means noncarbonated, com gas means carbonated.
