A Drive In & Around the Forêt de Fontainebleau

The forest of Fontainebleau extends over a vast area along the left bank of the Seine, to the southeast of the capital.

Start at the Porte d'Orléans and follow the A6 motorway towards Evry and Lyon. Leave at the Fontainebleau exit and continue on the N37 for 7km; turn right to Barbizon.

This village gave its name to a group of landscape painters who settled there in the mid-19th century, among them Jean-François Millet. They were joined later by some of the future Impressionists Renoir, Sisley and Monet.

Leave Barbizon towards Fontainebleau.

Take time to visit the castle, or at least the park, and to stroll around the town.

Drive southeast along the D58 for 4km bearing left at the Y-junction. Turn right onto the Route Ronde (D301).

This scenic route takes you through the forest and offers many possibilities for walking and cycling.

Turn left on the D409 to Milly-la-Forêt.

This small town nestling round an imposing covered market is a traditional centre for growing medicinal plants. The Cyclop (1km north) is a monumental modern sculpture which took 20 years to complete.

Follow the D372 for 3.5km and bear left for Courances.

The Château de Courances looks delightful, set like a jewel in a magnificent park designed by Le Nôtre, with pools, canals and small waterfalls.

Return to the main road and continue for 5km, then rejoin the motorway back to Paris.
