Parks and Gardens

There are a number of parks and gardens in or near the city centre. The most central of these is Villa Borghese which stretches out behind the Pincio Gardens above Piazza del Popolo. Here there are lakes, flower gardens, trees and rolling hillsides on which to rest. Above the Colosseum is the Colle Oppio, a slightly run-down turn-of-the-century style park which contains the ruins of Nero's Golden House and Trajan's baths as well as some inviting benches. On the other side of the Colosseum is the park of Villa Celimontana (entrance on Piazza della Navicella) laid out as formal gardens for the Mattei family in the 16th century. Off Via di Santa Sabina on the Aventine hill there's the Parco di San Alessio and a most delightful orangery with good views over Trastevere. In Trastevere itself you will find the botanical gardens (on Via Corsini off Via della Lungara), pretty Villa Sciarra (entrance on Via Calandrelli) built on a steep hillside and the massive Villa Doria Pamphili (entrance on Via di San Pancrazio) with its statues, trees, fountains and artificial river.
