Those who want to get right away from the city head off to the Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, 400sq km of alpine scenery which includes some of the highest peaks in the Apennine range (2,000m and above) and a network of well sign-posted walking, rambling and hiking routes. The park boasts a spectacular range of (admittedly rather shy) animals and birds including bears, wolves, chamonix, lynx, wild boars (which also feature on some local menus), eagles, falcons and owls. The centre of the park is Pescasseroli reached by bus from Via Tiburtina or car by way of Licenza or Subiaco.
