Ubon Ratchathani
Ubon Ratchathani is the largest city in eastern Isaan and an important communications and agricultural centre. Located on the banks of the Mun River (pronounced 'moon'), it is really a twin city, with the railroad station and commercial centre of Warin Chamrap to the south of the river and Ubon proper to the north. There is little to see in Warin so a walk around Ubon should be limited to the north of the river. The Tourism Authority of Thailand office on Thanon Kheuan Thani has excellent free maps of the town. Begin your walk at Wat Supatanaram in the southwestern part of Ubon by the banks of the Mun River. Often shortened to Wat Supat, this interesting temple blends Khmer, Thai and Chinese styles. The bot or ordination hall is reminiscent of early Cambodian temples, being entirely of stone. The roof corners feature dragons rather than the usual 'sky hooks' associated with Thai temples. In front of the bot hangs the largest wooden bell in Thailand. Head east from Wat Supat to the traffic circle, then north along Thanon Uparat - Ubon's main road - to turn right at the intersection with Thanon Kheuan Thani. Ubon National Museum is about 100m along on your left. This is one of the best museums in Thailand. Look for the early Khmer exhibits and the 19th-century Ubon objects. Walk east along Thanon Kheuan Thani. Turn north on Thanon Luang and proceed to Wat Thung Si Meuang on your left. This temple, one of the oldest in Ubon, has 150-year-old murals based on the Buddha's life and a fine library which was built on stilts above a pool to discourage termites. Distance 1.5km Time 1-2 hours, depending on temple visits Start point Wat Supatanaram, Thanon Phromthep End point Wat Thung Si Meuang Lunch Chiokee (Inexpensive) Address: Thanon Kheuan Thani |
