SCENIC BYWAY

North Carolina's Scenic Route 421

10.5 miles: 0 hours, 13 minutes

This byway on US 421 is sandwiched between the towns of Boone and Deep Gap, and while it is short, it is packed with vistas of the Appalachian Mountains, rivers and towns. At the Boone foothills, Snake Mountain and Elk Knob, part of the Amphibolite Range, stand in the distance, and closer by Fraser Firs fill the Christmas tree farms for which the area is known.

Heading toward Deep Gap on US 421, New River peeks out from the trees as the Blue Ridge Mountains come into the foreground for enviable views full of hardwood and mixed forest that in the chilly air of autumn burst with pops of red and yellow along the mountainsides.
