Musée Horta

This is not just a museum; it is the house that Begium's famed art nouveau architect, Victor Horta, built for himself. The art nouveau style, popular in Europe and especially in Brussels between 1893 and 1918, typically used industrial materials like steel and iron in the visible parts of houses. The decoration was inspired by nature, and decorative mosaics, or sgraffito, were often used. The house also features a beautiful glass ceiling. This can be seen to good effect from the stairwell which is flooded with natural light and is topped by an area known as the lantern. At the top of another level in the house is an equally light glass-roofed winter garden, or conservatory type structure. The furniture perfectly fits the overall style, and the attention to detail is stunning.
