Country of Islands

Denmark is a world of islands. There are more than 400 of them scattered around the country's coasts and across the Kattegat and the Baltic Sea. About 100 islands are inhabited. Funen (Fyn) is hailed as the “Garden of Denmark” because of its rich alluvial soils, legacy of the glacial debris left by retreating ice sheets.

The capital of Funen is Odense, the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen. Funen has a gentle rural nature overall, its lush farmland complemented by a pleasant southern coastline and by good beaches on the peaceful island of Langeland, off the southeast coast.
Funen is connected to Denmark's largest island, Zealand, by a typically Danish feat of remarkable engineering. The 11-mile-long Great Belt rail and road fixed link bridge island-hops, via the island of Sprogø, across the Great Belt (Storebælt) channel.
The ferry connection, used by visitors prior to 1998, was more romantic, but Scandinavian efficiency finally triumphed with a tunnel and bridge combination. A similar joint Danish-Swedish project, linking Copenhagen to Malmö across an artificial island built in the middle of the Øresund, was completed in 2000, thus laying the foundations for a new cultural and economic region.
