Historic Zealand

Copenhagen may dominate Zealand, but the whole island is a treasure house of Danish history. North Zealand has much to offer in terms of historic buildings: the lakeside setting of magnificent Frederiksborg Castle (Frederiksborg Slot); and Elsinore Castle (Kronborg Slot) at Helsingør, the awe-inspiring setting for Shakespeare's Hamlet, overlooking the Øresund and the Swedish coast.

Just west of Copenhagen is Roskilde, Denmark's medieval capital, with a splendid cathedral housing the decorated crypts of 38 Danish kings and queens. In southern Zealand is the city of Køge, whose medieval center survives; at Trelleborg, on the west coast where the new rail bridge slices across the Great Belt, are the remains of the finest Viking ring fort in Denmark. Finally, just off the south coast of Zealand are the islands of Møn, Falster and Lolland, all linked to the main islands by bridges. Of these, Møn is the most interesting because of its chalk cliffs, a startling contrast to Denmark's almost uniform flatness.
