NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION

TRAIN (vonat)
The state railroad, Magyar Államvasutak (MÁV), serves most towns. The best trains are express, linking Budapest with provincial centers; when journeying cross-country it may be quicker to go via the capital. Fares are low, and MÁV offers many discounted fares, including rail cards good for unlimited travel; Phone: 1 461 5400 (national); 1 461 5500 (international).

BUS (busz)
Long-distance buses are expensive, but sometimes quicker than trains. The main Budapest terminal is at Erzsébet tér. The main operator is state-owned Volánbusz, whose yellow buses serve even very small communities. Volánbusz is a member of Eurolines, who operate an international bus service; Phone: 1 485 2100 (for domestic and international services; daily 6 a.m.-9 p.m.).

FERRY (komp)
Ferries run on Lake Balaton, the Danube between Budapest and Esztergom, and the Tisza river (serving Tokaj, Szolnok, Csongrád and Szeged). Ferries generally run spring to late autumn. Obtain Budapest information from the Vigadó tér landing stage; Phone: 1 318 1223.
