Munich on Foot

Central Munich is compact and attractive, and easy to explore on foot. Long pedestrian streets (Neuhauser Strasse and Kaufingerstrasse) run from the main railroad station and from Karlstor, one of the city gates, to Marienplatz, the square at the heart of the Old Town. Here you can watch the mechanical characters of the carillon (Glockenspiel) at the front of the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) and visit the twin-towered cathedral. To the north of the square is the tree-lined Maximilianstrasse, which leads to the Bavarian Parliament building and the Residenz (palace). Great art collections - the Old and New Picture Galleries and the Modern Art Picture Gallery - are a short distance northwest of the city center; to the south are the history museum and, on an island in the Isar river, one of the world's foremost museums of science and technology, the German Museum (Deutsches Museum).
