Undergoing long-term, large-scale renovation, this former Art Deco heavyweight is returning to its pre-war glory. Be sure to ask for a renovated room, which far surpasses the ones with dated décor. From Muhammad Ali to Nikola Tesla, this hotel has had many luminary guests who have stayed one night, lived here or visited over the many years. Madison Square Garden is across the street. Dine in the underground bank vault and have a steak dinner where they used to store the Benjamins, or head upstairs for a burger and fries at the wonderful Tick Tock diner.
