George Washington National Forest Scenic Highway

56.2 miles: 0 hours, 50 minutes

Flanked by trees, the George Washington National Forest Scenic Highway from Lexington, Va., to the West Virginia border takes you past sharp mountain slopes and the Jackson River. Stop at one of the many recreational areas along the way and explore the dense woodland surroundings, or pass through Clifton Forge, an architecturally diverse and engaging community with a rich railroad heritage.

Much of this I-64 excursion traverses George Washington National Forest. Blanketing the Allegheny Mountain range with hardwood and hemlocks, the forest covers more than a million acres. When you need a rest, you'll find plenty of conveniently located picnic areas as well as peaceful off-road retreats with bubbling streams and quiet ponds.
