SCENIC BYWAY

Haleakala Scenic Highway

Maui’s Haleakalā National Park is an otherworldly place of black lava flows and giant reddish-hued cinder cones, dominated by a 10,023-foot-tall dormant volcano. SR 378, the spectacularly scenic Haleakalā Highway, climbs above the clouds to the crater (actually a valley created by erosion). The long road to the top is slow going but totally worth the adventure.

The Haleakala Highway (SR 378) begins at the foot of the volcanic mountains that dominate Haleakala National Park. The two-lane road ascends in a seemingly endless series of switchbacks, and closer to the summit there are no guardrails; drivers should use caution. Stop at Leleiwi Overlook, 6 miles above the park headquarters visitor center; the views are amazing.
