Wallraf-Richartz-Museum/Museum Ludwig

Cologne's major collection of German and international art is here, with works through the 19th century shown in the first-floor Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, and 20th-century art shown in the Museum Ludwig, which occupies the rest of the building. At the Wallraf-Richartz you can study the work produced in Cologne in the 15th century, when the city was at the forefront of artistic development. In particular, look for the triptychs by the artist known as the Master of St. Bartholomew, one of the last of the Cologne School, whose brightly colored paintings resemble carvings.

Many 20th-century greats are represented in the Ludwig Museum, including Otto Dix and Max Ernst; the section on pop art has works by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.
