This fascinating area was mainly occupied by religious institutions before the French Revolution, but the institutions were dissolved in 1789, leaving the area open to redevelopment by the silk industry. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the liveliest, earthiest areas of Lyon.
