Musée des Beaux-Arts
The elegant mass of the Musée des Beaux-Arts (Museum of Fine Arts) dominates one side of the spacious place des Terreaux,
with the impressive Hôtel de Ville (Town Hall) at right angles to it. The building was formerly the Benedictine convent of
St.-Pierre, rebuilt between 1659 and 1685, and it opened as a museum in 1803. The museum has exhibits from Egypt and the
ancient world, and collections of pottery, porcelain, glass and sculpture. Track down the Lalique glass display and the charming
animal figurines, including a cumbersome yet graceful polar bear by 19th-century sculptor François Pompon. In the entrance
foyer Pietro Perugino's Ascension of Christ, one of the artist's finest works outside Italy, is a fitting introduction to
what's in store.
