Les Grandes Places
Strasbourg is scattered with grandes places (large squares). The main three - place Kléber, place Gutenberg and place de la
Cathédrale - are all within a five-minute walk of each other. The cathedral square, with its cobblestones and timber-framed
houses, is distinctly medieval; 18th-century Kléber square has an elegant spaciousness; and Renaissance-style place Gutenberg
nicely bridges the architectural time gap. From late November through December, all three squares are the backdrop for Strasbourg's
famous Christkindelsmärik (Market of the Child Jesus), a month-long street market dating from 1570, when the whole city glitters
with light and smells of tantalizing spice.
