Pagosa (healing water) Springs, aptly named by the Ute Indians who vied for possession of the area's thermal springs, became a lumbering center and popular spa in the late 19th century. Bursting from the earth at 140 degrees Fahrenheit, the waters are used to heat some of the community's buildings. Today's bathers enjoy the waters at a variety of pools open to the public.
