Alexanderplatz

Alexanderplatz, the marketplace known to Berliners as “Alex,” was the heart of the old city. Rebuilt after World War II in a bleak style, it is now scheduled for renovations. Two old buildings have survived: the Rotes Rathaus (Red City Hall), built from 1861 to 1869 in Italian Renaissance style; and the St. Marien-Kirche (St. Mary's Church), built from 1270 to 1340 and Berlin's second-oldest parish church. At the center of the square, Fernsehturm, a 1,207-foot television tower, includes a revolving restaurant and a viewing platform at the top.
