Known as one of the oldest summer resorts in America, Wolfeboro attained this status in 1768 when Gov. John Wentworth of Massachusetts built the country's first summer home. A marker at the site, 5 miles east on SR 109, commemorates the estate. By the time the governor's manor house burned in 1820, it was no longer unique.
