Yarmouth was founded in 1651 by French colonists, who subsequently were expelled by the British in 1755. The area was settled by New Englanders in 1761 and later by returning Acadians and Loyalists. An important shipbuilding and shipping town during the days of sail, Yarmouth prospered during the 19th century. Figuring prominently in the city's economy was the Killam Brothers Shipping Office, 90 Water St., which managed sailing fleets for more than 200 years. Now a museum, its 19th-century furnishings and ledgers tell the story of the era; phone (902) 742-5539. Learn More...
