About BeaumontThe early economy of Beaumont, which was settled around 1824, was based on cattle, lumber and rice. Then on Jan. 10, 1901, in the nearby Spindletop field, the first great Texas oil well blew. The Beaumont area currently forms one of the largest concentrations of petroleum refineries in the nation. Agriculture also contributes to the economy of this thriving deep-water Neches River port.
