Ang Mo Kio (AMK)
Ang Mo Kio Town, Singapore
If you want to see a Singapore largely devoid of tourists, head to the new town of Ang Mo Kio (AMK) in the north central region of Singapore. While considered a new town, AMK was originally settled by rubber plantation workers in the late nineteenth century and has since matured into a thriving (and densely populated) community.
The Basics
You’ll find similar mega-malls and hawker centers as you would in downtown Singapore, only without as many crowds and tourists. The neighborhood is home to Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, one of the largest and most beautiful green spaces in the country, as well as an incredibly active group of bird-singing hobbyists who congregate with their feathered friends near Ang Mo Kio Town Garden. The busiest part of town centers on AMK Hub, a shopping center known for its excellent hawker centre-like food offerings. Few organized tours visit the largely residential neighborhood, so if you’d like to explore with a guide, be sure to book a private tour.
Things to Know Before You Go
- Playgrounds, parks, and a bike path beneath the MRT viaduct make this neighborhood a hit with active travelers and outdoor enthusiasts.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes, as this neighborhood is best explored on foot.
How to Get There
It’s easy to get to AMK by riding the Singapore MRT North South line to Ang Mo Kio or Yio Chu Kang Stations.
When to Get There
There isn’t really a best time to visit AMK; it depends on what you’re in the mood for. Many of the neighborhood’s attractions are outdoors, so it’s a good idea to visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon when the heat is less intense. Those hot afternoon hours are a perfect time to check out the shopping centers or grab a bite to eat.
Other Neighborhoods to Explore
Each lesser-known neighborhood in Singapore has its own unique flavor and temperament, and some deserve a spot on any traveler’s itinerary. River Valley is a food and nightlife hub with easy access to Orchard Road, Robertson Quay, and Clarke Quay; Tiong Bahru ranks among Singapore’s oldest and hippest enclaves with an excellent hawker centre. Leafy Dempsey Hill is home to the Singapore Botanic Garden, as well as numerous walking trails.
