Arco do Triunfo (Arco da Rua Augusta)

The towering Arco do Triunfo in Lisbon, also known as the Rua Augusta Arch, overlooks one of the biggest commercial squares in Europe, the Praça do Comércio, which was built in commemoration of the city's rebuilding following the 1755 earthquake. Take in the arch’s intricate exteriors from the ground, or head up to the top for city views.
The arch towers high over the Baixa area and features a huge depiction of the Portuguese coat of arms just below the cornice, crowned with statues of Glory, Genius, and Valor. It’s a popular stop on many small group tours of Lisbon, though not all involve going to the top of the arch. Visitors also can prebook individual admission to the viewing area, and those with the Lisboa Card visit free.
Heading to the top of the arch is a must-do for panoramic views of Lisbon.
Note that the arch is not wheelchair accessible, although there is an elevator to the top.

The arch is situated on the Praça do Comércio and is most easily accessed by taking the Blue Line of the Lisbon Metro to the Terreiro do Paço Station. Lines E15 and E25 of the tram and numerous bus lines stop nearby.
The Arco do Triunfo is a year-round attraction and it is worth stopping by to admire its exteriors whenever you happen to be passing by. However, if you want to go inside, the arch’s interiors can be visited daily from 9am to 8pm; the last entry is at 7:45pm. Visit around sunset for the best light.
The Baixa area of Lisbon, where the arch is located, is a prime example of how Lisbon was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake with safety in mind. The Marquis of Pombal built the area on a grid with a focus on earthquake-proof buildings designed to distribute force. As you wander through the area, take note of the differences in construction between this area and older parts of town.
