Bandama Caldera (Caldera de Bandama)

Bandama, Gran Canaria, 35319

The best views in Las Palmas lie at the south end of the Gran Canarian capital, where you can hike into the heart of a gigantic ancient crater more than 5,000 years old. The Bandama Caldera is an impressive sight, stretching the width of 10 football fields and framed against a backdrop of the city skyline and the ocean.

The basics

Whether you see it by heading up to the 1,867-foot (569-meter) high viewpoint at the Pico De Bandama or by following one of the cater's many hiking trails, the Bandama Caldera is a top Las Palmas attraction. Many city sightseeing tours include a stop at an observation point for a crater view, often in combination with a drive into Gran Canaria’s central mountains. Another option is to visit the volcanic vineyards nearby for a tasting.

Things to know before you go

Bandama Caldera is more than just views—it’s also a protected natural area that’s popular with hikers and birders. There are few facilities near the crater, so bring everything you need for a hike, including sunscreen, snacks, and water. Many of the viewpoints can be accessed by car, but there are often steps to the observation decks, making access tricky for wheelchairs and strollers.

How to get there

The Bandama Caldera is about 9 miles (15 kilometers) south of downtown Las Palmas, and it takes about 20 minutes to drive from the city to Pico de Bandama. If you don’t have transportation, you can take the GuaGua 311 bus from San Telmo station to the caldera or join one of the many tours that visit the crater.

When to get there

The viewpoints around the Bandama Caldera are always open, but choose a clear day for the best views. You can hike in the caldera all year round, but trails are exposed to the weather, so dress accordingly. The most magical views are at sunrise and sunset, but don’t leave too late to drive back down, as the narrow mountain roads can be hard to navigate in the dark.

Hiking the Bandama Caldera

There is one main hiking trail, the Camino "Agustinito" al Fondo de la Caldera. It descends into the Bandama caldera and loops around the crater. The scenic 2.1-mile (3.4-kilometer) route starts at the Bandama bus station near Santa Brigida and passes local farms and vineyards, as well as natural caves once used by the Guanches people. Plan about two hours to complete the hike at a relaxed pace.
