POINT OF INTEREST

Caleta Beach (Playa Caleta)

La Romana, Dominican Republic, 91000

A small, rocky beach frequented by locals, Caleta Beach (Playa Caleta) gives visitors an authentic view of beach life in the Dominican Republic compared to other touristy beaches in La Romana. Convenient for cruise passengers, this remote beach area features stunning scenery with an excellent view of Catalina Island, local cuisine, and a small bay ideal for swimming.

The basics

Known for its genuine Caribbean atmosphere, Caleta Beach is a good spot for budget travelers or those who want to get off the beaten path. Snorkel equipment may be handy here, as there are fish and sometimes other sea creatures to see off the shore. Many vendors serve fresh fish and other local delicacies like yaniqueques (fried flatbread). Bring pesos or be prepared to bargain, as vendors don't always have change for US dollars. And remember to finish off your meal with a refreshingly cold local beer.

Things to know before you go

  • The beach and ocean floor in certain areas can be rocky, so water shoes are recommended.

  • Since this is considered a local beach, it may not be as well maintained as the tourist-heavy spots.

  • Be sure to monitor your belongings, especially if you go swimming.

How to get there

From La Romana cruise terminal, you can hop in a cab or take a tour bus to Caleta Beach. If taking a taxi, arrange a time for the driver to pick you up. Otherwise, you may have difficulty returning to your resort or cruise ship. You can also rent a car. From Punta Cana, it’s about an hour's drive.

When to get there

Like the rest of the Dominican Republic, December through March is considered the best period to visit Caleta Beach and the other beaches in La Romana, thanks to the dry, warm weather. Because Caleta is a favorite of locals, expect bigger crowds on the weekends and holidays. You’ll also encounter more travelers when a cruise ship is docked.

More beaches of La Romana

In addition to Caleta Beach, the coastal city of La Romana and the surrounding area boast several picturesque stretches of sand. Within the Casa de Campo resort, Minitas Beach is dotted with lounge chairs and palm trees and requires a day pass to access, while Catalina Island, just off the coast, is a tiny inhabited isle known as a prime diving and snorkeling spot.
