The Basics

The Mid-Levels Escalators is not actually one continuous escalator, but rather a series of 16 reversible one-way escalators and three reversible inclined walkways connected in places by footbridges. You can easily take the escalator from end to end, and enjoy the sights along the way. Or hop on and off at different stops and explore the surrounding areas, which are full of restaurants, bars, markets, galleries, and historic sights.

A number of sightseeing tours include a ride on the Mid-Levels Escalators, as well as stops at attractions nearby, including Man Mo Temple, Hollywood Road, and Cat Street Market. Or combine it with a few other iconic journeys in Hong Kong, including a ride on the Peak Tram, a ride on the Ding Ding Tram, and a Victoria Harbor cruise.

• It’s free to ride the Mid-Levels Escalator.
• Passengers should stand on the right and let people pass on the left.
• Sections of the escalator may be shut down for refurbishment.
• The escalator is not wheelchair accessible.

How to Get There

The Mid-Levels Escalators stretches from Queen’s Road Central (with links to IFC Mall) to Conduit Road. Access the escalator at any of the roads and streets that it crosses, where there will be an entrance and exit, often on both sides of the road.

When to Get There

The Mid-Levels Escalators runs from 6am to midnight, running downhill from 6am to 10am and uphill from 10am to midnight. It takes about 20 to 25 minutes to travel the length of the escalator.

Mid-Levels Escalator on the Big Screen

The Mid-Levels Escalators was featured prominently in Won Kar-wai’s 1994 classic movie, Chung King Express. In the movie, the female protagonist would ride the escalator and peer into Cop 663’s apartment, which was right next to the escalator. The Mid-Levels Escalators also featured in the 2008 Batman movie, The Dark Knight.
