POINT OF INTEREST

Charlotte Motor Speedway (NASCAR)

5555 Concord Parkway South, Concord, North Carolina

Satisfy your need for speed at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, “America’s Home for Racing.” Located just outside of Charlotte, the speedway is home to some of NASCAR’s biggest races, along with a full schedule of other races and events. The speedway also offers behind-the-scenes tours and racing experiences for fans.

The Charlotte Motor Speedway has seating capacity for 84,000. There are several tracks, including the 1.5-mile (2.3-kilometer) Superspeedway, the only concrete 4-lane drag racing strip in the country, and a dirt track. In addition to NASCAR races, the speedway also hosts races by the National Hot Rod Association, Monster Truck, and World of Outlaws, along with a number of car shows, fairs, and other events.

Purchase your tickets online ahead of time or at the box office and at select gates on race day. Book the Feel the Thrills Tour to get a closer look at the tracks, including a van ride on the Superspeedway. Or jump behind the wheel with a racing experience. Fans that don’t want to steer can opt for a ride-along experience instead.

  • Coolers are allowed in the grandstand, though there are size limitations. Glass containers are not permitted.
  • Alcohol and smoking are not permitted within family seating sections.
  • It’s possible to stay overnight near the Speedway at a variety of campgrounds.
  • The speedway is accessible to those with limited mobility.

Charlotte Motor Speedway is located in the city of Concord, about 13 miles (21 kilometers) outside of Charlotte. Take I-85 to Exit 49. Alternatively, take Hwy 29 and Hwy 49. Free parking is available on-site. There is also a regional bus service from the JW Clay Lynx light rail station.

The speedway hosts many races and events throughout the year. Check the website for the latest schedule. For larger races, there are often pre-race concerts and other activities. Many visitors also enjoy tailgating in the parking lot areas prior to the race.

Racing fans will also want to visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Located in Uptown Charlotte, the 150,000-square-foot (13,935-square-meter) venue is both a museum and an interactive entertainment attraction honoring the history and heritage of NASCAR. It features more than 50 interactive experiences and includes numerous artifacts, a theater, broadcast studio, and restaurant.
