Citadelle Laferrière
Vaseux
Once the pinnacle of Haiti’s national defense, the imposing Citadelle Laferrière is now an architectural icon. Located on the summit of Bonnet à l’Evêque mountain, the UNESCO World Heritage Site—which dates back to the beginning of the 19th century—can be seen from almost anywhere in northern Haiti.
The Basics
The largest fortress in the western hemisphere, the Citadelle Laferrière is accessible via a 7-mile (11-kilometer) trail split into two sections. The only way to navigate the first section is by 4WD vehicle; the second part must be completed either on foot or on horseback. Several tours of northern Haiti visit the Citadelle Laferrière along with the Sans-Souci Palace, and include a horseback ride to the top of the mountain.
Things to Know Before You Go
The Citadelle Laferrière is a must-see for history buffs and first-time travelers to Haiti.
Wear sturdy shoes if you’re planning to climb the uneven trails that lead to the fortress.
Most of the fortress’s staircases lack guardrails, making them unsuitable for children and visitors with reduced mobility.
How to Get There
The town of Milot serves as the gateway to the Citadelle Laferrière, 5 miles (8 kilometers) away. If you’re not part of a guided tour, take a taxi or drive to the parking lot halfway up to the fortress. From there, get to the top on foot or horseback.
When to Get There
The Citadelle Laferrière is open daily from 8am to 4pm. Aim to get there as early as possible, when temperatures are coolest and crowds are fewest.
Sans-Souci Palace
Just a short distance from the Citadelle Laferrière, Sans-Souci Palace is one of Haiti’s most intriguing historic attractions. The name translates from French as “without worry,” while the palace itself represents the megalomania of the slave-turned-tyrant who built it. The ruins pay homage to dilapidated grandeur and provide a glimpse into Haiti’s turbulent past.
