Concepcion Independence Square (Plaza de la Independencia)

Libertador Gral. Bernardo O'Higgins 648, Concepción, Chile

In the heart of the south Chilean city, Concepcion Independence Square (Plaza de la Independencia) is at the core of Chilean history. It was here, on January 1, 1818, that Bernardo O’Higgins declared Chile’s independence from Spanish rule. The square is an unmissable stop on a tour of Concepcion.

The basics

Historical importance aside, Concepcion’s Independence Square has a similar design to many main squares (Plazas de Armas) in Chile, with its statues, shady trees, and benches to rest. Notable features include a monument to the Indigenous Mapuche leader Lautaro; a monument to Pedro de Valdivia—Spanish conquistador, first royal governor of Chile, and founder of Concepcion; and, in the center, a fountain surrounded by mermaids and topped with the figure of the goddess Ceres, symbol of agricultural abundance. Most walking tours of Concepcion include a stop at Independence Square.

Things to know before you go

  • Sometimes vendors sell snacks in the square, and musicians perform.

  • Visitors should remain aware of their surroundings and watch their belongings if visiting the area after dark.

  • There is no admission fee to visit.

How to get there

Concepcion Independence Square is located in the center of the city. Surrounded by stores, malls, and offices, it’s within easy walking distance from several hotels and major attractions. The city’s main bus terminal, Terminal Callao, is 20 minutes away by bus or 45 minutes by foot, and has frequent service to and from Santiago.

When to get there

As there are no opening hours, you can visit Concepcion Independence Square any time or day you wish. If you’re looking for live music, you’re most likely to find it in the evenings. On Chile’s independence day (Fiestas Patrias) on September 18, the square is the center of festivities.

Cathedral of the Most Holy Conception

In front of the square, the Cathedral of the Most Holy Conception (Catedral de la Santísima Concepción), is known for its neo-Romanesque architecture. Inside, a small, free-to-visit museum displays its collection of religious art, including priestly vestments, paintings, and liturgical vessels, including a bronze and Venetian enamel custody and an ivory figure of Christ donated by Philip II of Spain.
