Da'an Forest Park
No. 1, Section 2, Xinsheng S. Road, Da’an, Taipei, Taiwan, 106
Spanning 64 acres (26 hectares in central Taipei’s Da’an District, Da’an Forest Park is one of the city’s largest and most popular green retreats. An oasis from the Taiwansese capital’s always-on bustle, the park offers walking trails, ponds, athletic facilities, public artworks, and plenty of grassy space for lounging and picnicking.
The basics
Many comparisons are made between Da’an Forest Park and New York’s Central Park, and for good reason: both public parks are sprawling, transportative “green lungs” for their respective cities, and both are conveniently located in the heart of the action. Da’an Forest Park, opened in 1994, is frequented by both locals and visitors throughout the day: runners lap the park, families head to the playground and, in the summer months, performances are held at the on-site amphitheater.
Da’an Forest Park is a highlight of Taipei, and there are plenty of ways to discover it. Book a walking or bike tour to explore the park with a local, as well as other landmarks like Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Elephant Mountain, and beyond. The park also features on after-dark night market tours of the neighborhood, and is easy to explore independently, too.
Things to know before you go
- Da’an Forest Park is minutes from Yongkang Street, one of Taipei’s foodie hubs; grab a snack before you visit to enjoy a picnic in the park.
- Public restrooms, including wheelchair-accessible restrooms, are available at the park.
- A skating rink, basketball courts, and running trails offer options for athletic visitors.
- In need of a pick-me-up? Head to the branch of Louisa, a local coffee shop chain, located on the northern edge of the park.
How to get there
Da’an Forest Park is located in the central Da’an District. To get there using public transportation, take the MRT Red Line to Da’an Park Station; the area is also served by local bus lines. Alternatively, the park can be reached on foot, by bike, or by taxi.
When to get there
Da’an Forest Park is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is buzzing from morning to nightfall. The park is at its busiest during weekends and public holidays, and when performances are held at its amphitheater. Visit early in the day if you’re after a quieter experience.
What to Do in the Da’an District
Home to universities and cultural institutions, restaurants and markets, the buzzing Da’an District is a must-visit when exploring central Taipei. After you’ve checked Da’an Forest Park off your list, admire the campus of the National Taiwan University, shop on busy Zhongxiao Road, and enjoy a traditional experience at the Wistaria Tea House. Don’t forget to stay late, so you can swing by the Gongguan and Linjiang night markets.
