Dalí Theatre-Museum (Teatro-Museo Dalí)

Plaça Gala i Salvador Dalí, 5, Figueres, Girona, 17600

Housed in the former Municipal Theatre of Figueres, the Dalí Theatre-Museum (Teatro-Museo Dalí) was converted by Salvador Dalí himself into a museum to display his works—the building itself is considered his final great work. Of the major Dalí sites in northeastern Spain, including his former homes in Portlligat and Púbol, this is the best place to explore Dalí’s art and see some of his most famed pieces. Even the polka-dotted exterior is pure Dalí, and his final resting place is here in a crypt beneath its stage.

The basics

One of the best ways to see the museum, especially for those with limited time, is on a guided day trip from Barcelona, which usually allows for one to two hours of museum exploration. Day trips can also include visits to nearby Girona or two other Dalí attractions—the Castle of Pubol and the Salvador Dalí House–Portlligat—along Spain's Costa Brava.

Things to know before you go

  • The Dalí Museum is a must-see for art lovers who want to see the artist’s famous works and learn more about his inspiration.

  • Dalí Theatre-Museum (Teatro-Museo Dalí) tours from Barcelona that also visit the surrounding area can last more than 11 hours.

  • Bring some one-euro coins to activate several interactive exhibits within the museum.

  • The museum's central courtyard, stage, ground floor, and under-stage area (the site of Dalí's crypt) are all accessible by wheelchair.

How to get there

Figueres is located 87 miles (140 kilometers) northeast of Barcelona. A guided tour with roundtrip transport is the easiest way to visit the museum from the city. You can also visit independently by taking a 55-minute high-speed train ride from Barcelona Sants station to Figueres Vilafant. The museum is located a 15-minute walk (or short taxi ride) from the train station. The nearest commercial airport is in Girona, 27 miles (43 kilometers) south.

When to get there

Although opening and closing hours vary slightly, the museum is generally open daily from 10am–6pm. Due to its popularity as a day trip from Barcelona, the museum can get crowded in peak tourist season in July and Aug. It quiets down from Oct. to Apr., and the cooler temperatures make exploring Figueres more pleasant, too. To avoid crowds, visit first thing in the morning or in the late afternoon, a few hours before the museum closes.

The Dalí jewels

Dalí Theatre-Museum (Teatro-Museo Dalí) tickets include access to the Dalí-Joies exhibit. It occupies two floors of the museum annex. Inside are 39 pieces of jewelry made from gold and precious stones, as well as concept drawings made by Dalí between 1941 and 1970. It’s well worth setting aside an extra 30 to 40 minutes to tour this secondary collection.

Ways to explore

Most visitors explore the permanent and rotating exhibits at the Dalí Theatre-Museum in a few hours. If you’re coming independently, it’s best to book tickets in advance on the museum website as they tend to sell out, and are more expensive at the box office. You can visit with day trips from Barcelona, which generally combine the museum with other sights, such as the picturesque towns of Girona or Cadaques. Some Dalí-themed tours take you to all the points in the “Dalinian Triangle”: the museum, the coastal Salvador Dalí House, and the Castle of Púbol (Gala Dalí Castle).

Wheelchair entry is via Gala Dalí Square, but only some museum areas are accessible for travelers using wheelchairs—the museum website has a comprehensive list of accessible areas. Service animals are permitted in the museum.
