Dynjandi (Fjallfoss)
Dynjandi Walking Trail, Iceland, 466
Dynjandi (which means “thunderous”), or Fjallfoss, is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in all of Iceland. In the island country’s remote Westfjords region, you’ll pass seven other waterfalls on a 15-minute hike up to Dynjandi, where the 328-foot (100-meter) cascade spreads like a bridal veil over the volcanic rocks.
The basics
In addition to being quite tall, Dynjandi is 100 feet (30 meters) wide at its top and 200 feet (60 meters) wide at its base—it makes quite the whoosh as the waterfalls. A rocky path leads up to Dynjandi’s viewing area; it’s suitable terrain for most ages and fitness levels, with plenty of stairs and benches. The 15-minute trek up roughly 650 feet (200m) is a delightful one, with views of the smaller Haestahjallafoss, Strompgljufrafoss, Gongumannafoss, Hrisvathsfoss, Kvislarfoss, Hundafoss, and Baejarfoss along the way.
Things to know before you go
The path is steep in parts and can be quite difficult for those with bad knees. It’s not built for wheelchairs or strollers.
Dynjandi is a natural preserve—stay on the paths to not damage the local flora.
Parking and bathrooms can be found onsite.
The road to Dynjandi is not maintained in winter.
How to get there
Most people access Dynjandi via cruise ship or tour bus excursion, though there is parking onsite for those who have a car. If you do have your wheels, know that several roads to the falls are gravel and can be closed in winter, so make sure conditions are in your favor.
When to get there
This is a popular stop with tour buses and cruise ships during Iceland’s high season (May to September). If you’re visiting Iceland during this time, try to visit Dynjandi as early—or as late—as possible to avoid large groups descending on the falls at once. In winter, the access roads may be closed entirely.
How to visit the waterfall at midnight
Remember: Iceland has 24 hours of sunlight in summer, meaning a midnight visit to these spectacular falls isn’t off the table in June and July. Visit anywhere from 8pm to 8am, and not only will you likely have the falls to yourself, but you’ll get to make a memory of getting misted at midnight in Iceland’s remote Westfjords.
