POINT OF INTEREST

Footdee (Fittie)

Aberdeen, Scotland

The tiny residential community of Footdee—or “Fittie” as it is pronounced locally—offers a peek into Scotland’s maritime heritage. The former fishing village still displays its historic character, with narrow cobblestone streets lined with stone cottages, which face inward, backing the North Sea, for protection from storms.

The basics

A visit to Footdee provides a charming escape from the bustling Aberdeen city center—and a colorful contrast to the granite gray city. Tucked away just off the Esplanade, Footdee is well worth a visit to wander around its creatively decorated cottages, colorfully painted sheds, and lovingly tended gardens. Some walking tours of Aberdeen include a visit to Footdee and provide historical background on the development and preservation of the community.

Things to know before you go

  • Footdee is a residential community: Respect residents’ privacy and ask before taking photos of people and homes.

  • Public bathrooms are located just off the Esplanade.

  • Children are welcome to make use of the nautical-themed playground.

How to get there

Footdee is less than a 10-minute drive east of Aberdeen city center or you can ride the number 13 bus. Walking takes around 20 minutes: If you’re on foot, consider returning via the city beach to continue your sightseeing.

When to get there

You can visit Footdee any time, year-round, though a daytime visit is recommended to see the area and avoid bothering residents. Be sure to dress for the weather, which can be wild, wet, and windy; perched on the coast, Footdee often bears the brunt of tempestuous North Sea storms.

Food and drink

Meals come with views at Silver Darling, overlooking the entrance to Aberdeen Harbour. Located in a former customs house next to the North Pier, this long-running restaurant serves local produce, including fresh-off-the-boat seafood. Visitors can also stop by the beachside Cairn Coffee or have a drink at the Fittie Bar.
