Gorlero Avenue (Avenida Gorlero)
Avenida Gorlero, Punta del Este, Departamento de Maldonado, 20100
Gorlero Avenue (Avenida Gorlero) is Punta del Este’s main street, running through the heart of the peninsula. Named after Juan Gorlero, the first mayor of Maldonado, and also known as Calle 22, the palm tree–studded boulevard is lined with shops, restaurants, bars, and cafés.
The basics
Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll likely find it along Gorlero Avenue, whether it’s shopping for clothes and souvenirs, sampling Uruguayan food at a local restaurant, or sipping cocktails. Or perhaps you’d like to pop into an art gallery, catch a movie, try your luck at the casino, or pose for photos with one of the many “living statues” and street performers? This street is so integral to Punte del Este life that all city tours will at least pass by.
Things to know before you go
You’ll find a huge variety of restaurants, bars, and cafés along Gorlero Avenue, and there’s something for all tastes.
The avenue is ideally situated for cruise passengers—the Punta del Este cruise port is just a few blocks from the south end of the street.
The wide, paved sidewalks of Gorlero Avenue make it easily accessible for strollers and wheelchairs.
How to get there
Gorlero Avenue runs almost the entire length of the peninsula, from El Foque (Calle 33) up to the Punta del Este roundabout, near Playa Brava—about 10 blocks. The best way to explore the street is on foot, but several local buses also stop nearby. There’s a car park at the north end of the avenue, close to the casino.
When to get there
Gorlero Avenue is always buzzing with people, day and night. It’s busiest in the summer (December to February), so be ready for crowds, as well as seasonal street entertainers.
A walking tour of Punta del Este
The easily walkable peninsula of Punta del Este is home to some of the city’s most popular attractions. Start by watching the boats at Punta del Este port, then pass by the bright blue Our Lady of the Candelaria church on the way to the coastal lookout point of Las Mesitas. Follow the length of Gorlero Avenue to reach the seaside neighborhood of La Pastora, the sandy beach of Playa Brava, and the famous Fingers of Punta del Este sculpture.
