Hadrian’s Gate
Barbaros, Muratpaşa, Antalya, Turkish Riviera, 07100
Marking the eastern entrance to Kaleiçi—Antalya’s historic Old Town—Hadrian’s Gate is the last of the city’s ancient gates, dating back to AD 130. Named in honor of Roman emperor Hadrian after his visit to the city, the triple-arched gateway is decorated with marble columns and is one of Antalya’s most distinctive landmarks.
The Basics
Many Antalya city tours include a photo stop at Hadrian’s Gate, and visiting with a guide can offer greater insight into the history of this ancient structure. Join a walking tour of Kaleiçi’s historic landmarks and stroll around Antalya Marina, or opt for an electric bike tour of the city to cover more ground. Another popular choice is to combine a sightseeing tour of central Antalya with nearby attractions like Duden Waterfall or Antalya Aquarium.
Things to Know Before You Go
There is no admission charge and the gate is always open.
There are numerous places to eat and drink along Atatürk Boulevard.
Hadrian’s Gate is not wheelchair accessible; passage through the gate is via two flights of stairs.
How to Get There
Hadrian’s Gate is located just off Atatürk Boulevard, near its intersection with Recep Peker Boulevard. The gate marks the border between Kaleiçi and the new city. Trams stop nearby on Atatürk Cad, but the gate is also easily reached on foot from most central attractions.
When to Get There
Arrive early in the morning to attempt to get that elusive crowd-free photo, or come at sunset for a cocktail at the neighboring Shaker Bar, which offers views of the illuminated gate from its terrace.
A Walking Tour of Kaleiçi
The maze-like streets of Kaleiçi make an atmospheric area to explore on a walking tour. The neighborhood is dotted with historic monuments, souvenir shops, bars, cafés, and restaurants. Notable sights include the Mehmet Paşa mosque, which dates back to the 18th century; the old Clock Tower, which forms part of the ancient city walls; and the Selçuk-era Fluted Minaret.
