Holy Isle (Eilean Molaise)
Holy Isle, Isle of Arran, United Kingdom, KA27 8GB
A tiny island just off the coast of the Isle of Arran, the Holy Isle (Eilean Molaise) has long been seen as a spiritual destination. The former residence of the 6th-century St. Malaise, and known for its Viking history and runes, the island is today home to the Centre for World Peace and Health, a Buddhist retreat and meditation center.
The basics
Measuring just 2 miles (3 kilometers) long and located off of Arran’s southeastern coast, the tiny Holy Isle is a retreat for both spiritual seekers and nature lovers. Though it is home to just under two dozen permanent inhabitants, the island attracts visitors with sacred sites like St. Malaise’s cave (where the monk was thought to have sheltered), a spring thought to promote healing, and the modern-day Centre for World Peace and Health. Other attractions include its two lighthouses as well as its hill-walking and wildlife-spotting opportunities. During the summer high season, it’s easy to make your own way to the island for a day out.
Things to know before you go
There are no restaurants or cafés on the Holy Isle outside of the Centre for World Peace, so if you’re visiting for the day, be sure to bring your own provisions.
For intrepid hikers, the summit of Mullach Mor (the highest point on the island) offers rewarding views—but prepare for steep scrambles.
Weather here can be wet and changeable; don’t forget to pack warm and waterproof layers, as well as solid boots if you plan to hike.
How to get there
There is a direct public ferry from Lamlash on the Isle of Arran to the Holy Isle (if traveling from the Scottish mainland to Arran, first take the ferry from Ardrossan Harbour to Brodick, then take a bus or taxi to Lamlash). The Holy Isle ferry runs daily from April to October, and less frequently during the winter season.
When to get there
Summer is the best time to visit the Holy Isle, when ferry services are in full swing and the weather is at its best, making it easier to navigate the island’s hiking trails. While the Centre for World Peace and Health does offer retreats and programming throughout the year, most of its activities take place during this high season.
What to do in Lamlash
Holy Isle visitors pass through Lamlash en route to the ferry, and it’s worth sticking around to discover the charms of this small town on the Isle of Arran’s southeastern coast. From its quaint tea rooms to its coastal walking trails, from historical highlights like the Lamlash Parish Church to local golfing and kayaking facilities, Lamlash offers a taste of Scottish village life.
