POINT OF INTEREST

Les Bains d’Orient

214 Arset Aouzal Rd, Marrakesh, Morocco, 40030

In a city famous for its indulgent hammam baths, Les Bains d’Orient stands apart. This luxurious spa is located at the entrance to Marrakech’s bustling medina but seems worlds away with its quiet steam rooms, calming massage treatments, and indoor and outdoor relaxation areas. Take a break from the chaos of the city’s sprawling souk in this spa’s serene confines.

The basics

One of the most exclusive spas in the center of Marrakech, Les Bains d’Orient, books up in advance, so book ahead to avoid disappointment. Choose a traditional hammam treatment with a black soap or shea butter scrub followed by an argan oil moisturizing rub or extras like massages, beauty treatments, or soaks in the traditional copper tub. Face and body products are made with natural ingredients and based on traditional formulas used in hammams for centuries.

Things to know before you go

  • Robes, towels, and disposable undergarments are provided, as are lockers to store personal belongings.

  • The spa is open to both men and women; the minimum age to enter is 18.

  • Basic hammam treatments last around 35 minutes; packages with hammam treatments, massages, and other treatments can last up to two hours.

  • Plan to arrive about 20 minutes before your appointment.

  • The spa is not accessible to wheelchairs.

How to get there

Les Bains d’Orient is near the entrance of Marrakech’s walled medina, between the Bab Doukkala city gate and the Dar el Bacha Museum of Confluences (Dar el Bacha Musée des Confluences). It’s an easy walk from these two main attractions or the western side of the old town’s maze of streets. To reach the spa from farther away, taking a taxi is your best bet.

When to get there

The spa is open daily but is busiest on weekends and holidays. Because of the relaxing nature of the treatments, it’s best to visit at the end of a day of sightseeing rather than in the morning. Avoid the midday hours in summer, when the steam rooms can be oppressive.

All you need to know about a Moroccan hammam

A traditional hammam is simply a bathhouse where locals go for a rigorous scrub with black soap before relaxing in a steam room and ending with a rub down with natural argan oil. Many hammams are public baths where anyone can enter for a nominal fee; more luxurious hammams are private spas that offer perks like massages and beauty treatments, private steam rooms, and relaxation rooms or terraces.
