Bohol’s Mag-Aso Falls twin waterfalls tumble 25 feet (8 meters) into turquoise water at the base of a canyon lined with jungle vines and tropical greenery. Apart from stairs and a simple wooden viewing deck, the waterfalls feel entirely untouched by human hand—perfect photo territory when the conditions are right.
The basics
To reach Bohol’s Mag-Aso Falls, you descend around 200 steps through shady forest into the canyon. From there, the pool at the base of the falls shines a brilliant turquoise on a clear day. Unlike many Bohol beauty spots, the Mag-Aso Falls are unspoiled—with no stalls, bathrooms, changing area, or food or drink options. They’re on relatively few Bohol tour itineraries, but private drivers and Bohol guides will know the place.
Things to know before you go
- Mag-Aso Falls are a great choice for travelers who like to get off the tourist trail.
- People have died here in flash flooding after heavy rain. Keep an eye on the weather.
- Wear swimwear under your clothes, carry water, and consider making like a local and bringing a picnic.
- There’s a small charge to visit the falls, payable in PHP cash.
- There are a second set of Mag-Aso Falls on Negros, a large island far to the west of Bohol. Be sure to add “Bohol” when searching online.
- Steps and rocks can be slippery when it rains. Wear shoes with grip.
- Mag-Aso Falls are not wheelchair accessible.
How to get there
The Mag-Aso Falls sit a mile or two (2–3 kilometers) outside of the small town of Antequera, about a 13-mile (21-kilometer) drive north of Tagbilaran City Port. A tour is the easiest way to reach them from most resort areas, but jeepneys run to Antequera from Tagbilaran’s Cogon Market stop.
When to get there
The falls are an extremely popular weekend picnic destination for local families. Travelers looking for uncrowded pictures should visit mid-week and avoid public holidays. Stay away after heavy rain, when the waters turn brown, and the current rages down the gorge.
