Matira Beach (Plage Matira)
Bora Bora, Bora Bora
Located on the southern tip of Bora Bora, the public Matira Beach (Plage Matira) is one of the island’s most popular sandy spots. With clear water ideal for swimming, and a beach backed by swaying palm trees, it is an idyllic destination for sunbathing, snorkeling, and watersports.
The Basics
Matira Beach is Bora Bora’s only public beach—the others are all only accessible to guests of individual resorts. The mile-long stretch of sand has also been called one of the best beaches in the world. At low tide, you can wade from the sandbar at Matira Point all the way out to the nearby coral reef, where you can snorkel and might be able to spot the local stingray population.
Things to Know Before You Go
Remember to wear sunscreen and bring a hat when you visit the beach; there is some shade, but it’s limited in the middle of the day.
The west-facing beach is a popular spot to watch the sunset.
There are a number of restaurants and bars along the beach where you can grab a snack or have lunch.
How to Get There
Matira Beach is located in the far southern end of Bora Bora island, in French Polynesia. The beach stretches from Hotel Bora Bora to the tip of Matira Point. There is very little public transportation on the island, so it’s best to reach the beach by taxi, car, or bike. You can also reach the beach by boat from the resorts located on the islets surrounding the main island.
When to Get There
High season in Bora Bora runs from May to October, when the weather is driest. The beach is busiest on weekends, when locals head here to barbecue and enjoy the sun.
Snorkel or Dive with Manta Rays
Measuring up to 12 feet across, manta rays are some of French Polynesia’s most beautiful marine creatures. To swim with the rays, head to Anau, a commune on Bora Bora’s east coast. Just offshore, you’ll find schools of mantas, which come close to shore here to be cleaned by wrasse fish. Join a dive group (if you’re certified) or strap on a snorkel to see the majestic creatures up close.
