Mayá, Lost Mayan Kingdom
Ave Isaac 1272, Mahahual, Mexico, 77940
As its name suggests, this water park is modeled after a fabled Maya kingdom—and an explorer’s quest to find it. Located in the otherwise sleepy fishing village of Mahahual along the Costa Maya, the park is a riot of themed rides where visitors can live out adventure dreams on everything from large water slides to ziplines and lazy rivers.
The basics
The water park is ideal for families and kids, and visits are often organized as packages with family cruise ships that dock in the Costa Maya port in Mahahual. You can also visit on your own—it’s just a matter of paying the entrance fee and preparing for what should be at least a half day of fun. Inside, you’ll find eight water slides of different heights and intensities, a Jungle Zip Coaster, and other water rides and attractions you’d expect to find at a modern water park.
Things to know before you go
The entrance fee includes the use of showers, restrooms, and lounge chairs, but lockers, food, and drinks are extra.
The Mayan Sacrifice, a long water jump, has an extra cost.
You can rent lockers to store valuables and keep belongings safe while you explore.
Outside food and drinks are not allowed, but the park offers various dining options.
Some attractions have height and age requirements; check before lining up.
How to get there
Mayá, Lost Mayan Kingdom, is located in Mahahual, Mexico, a short distance from the cruise port and downtown area. Visitors can easily reach the park by taxi, rental car, or shuttle bus from nearby hotels and resorts, or by walking about 10 minutes from the cruise port.
When to get there
The park is open daily from morning to early evening, though opening hours can change depending on the arrival or departure of cruise ships. Generally, this part of the Costa Maya is a year-round destination, with a high season from January to March and a rainy season from September through November.
Diving in Mahahual
The small village of Mahahual is known in travel circles mostly for its cruise port and its proximity to the Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve, part of one of the world’s largest barrier reefs and among the top diving sites in the Mexican Caribbean. If you’re looking beyond the rides at Mayá for an aquatic journey, you could try booking an undersea trip with an outfitter in Mahahual.
