POINT OF INTEREST

Mt. Edith Cavell

Improvement District No. 12, Alberta

Mt. Edith Cavell exemplifies the grandeur of the Rockies in Jasper National Park, Alberta. This prominent mountain, named after the heroic British nurse Edith Cavell, captivates visitors with its rugged beauty. On the north face of the mountain lies the Angel Glacier, a soft blue monolith that resembles an angel with outstretched wings.

Mt. Edith Cavell is a favorite for hikers and photographers—its alpine meadow and turquoise pond are the perfect introduction to the Rockies. It’s often included on tours of the Rockies, highlighting the picturesque Cavell Meadows with its delicate wildflowers and Angel Glacier, which is expected to lose its distinctive shape due to rising temperatures. The mountain is also home to several climbing routes for those after more adventure.

  • Bring good hiking shoes to explore the trails.

  • Follow all posted information or the advice of your guide—this helps to protect the extremely fragile environment.

  • Stay on the trails and avoid going near the cliff faces due to danger from falling rocks and ice.

  • As the mountain is located within Jasper National Park, you’ll need to purchase a park pass, which can be done online, at the park gates, or at the town's visitor center.

From the town of Jasper, expect a 45-minute drive. The road ends in a 9.5-mile drive along Edith Cavell Road. It’s a narrow road with tight switchbacks, so those with trailers should leave them at the drop-off zone at the start of the road. It’s also unsuitable for large RVs. If you don’t have your own vehicle, opt for a tour of the region that includes a stop at Mt. Edith Cavell.

Edith Cavell Road opens at the end of June and closes at the start of September, but check the Parks Canada website for up-to-date weather and road conditions. Visit early in the season to wander among the wildflowers of Cavell Meadow, or visit in early September for cooler hiking weather.

If you want more time to explore the mountain and other nearby trails, settle down at the HI Mount Edith Cavell Wilderness Hostel. This rustic, off-the-grid spot is perfect for the adventurous traveler looking to meet like-minded friends. The cozy cabins are heated with fireplaces, and you’ll be able to get local insight on the best trails from the friendly staff.
