Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway
1700 Funatsu, Fujikawaguchiko, Minamitsuru District, 401-0301
For unobstructed views of the perfect snow-capped cone of Mt. Fuji, ride the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway from the eastern shore of Lake Fujikawaguchiko. It ascends 1,312 feet (400 meters) to an observation deck atop Mt. Tenjo at around 3,280 feet (1,000 meters). You can choose either a return ticket, or buy a one-way ticket up and walk the hiking trails down.
The basics
The Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway can’t be beaten for perfect Mt. Fuji photo opportunities.. Many group and private day tours from Tokyo make a stop at the ropeway along with other attractions around Kawaguchiko, including the Kawaguchi Asama Shrine, Mt. Fuji’s Fifth Station, and other viewpoints. Alternatively, you can visit the ropeway independently.
Things to know before you go
- Both return and one-way tickets are available for the ropeway. It’s cheaper to buy a return ticket than two one-way tickets.
- Active travelers can hike the 30-minute trail back down Mt. Tenjo, continue to a shrine on the summit, or set off on a day hike to nearby Mt. Mitsutoge.
- The ropeway isn’t fully accessible as there are stairs at a couple of points. Disabled travelers can get reduced entry tickets.
How to get there
If you don’t have your own vehicle, reach the ropeway by taking the Omni Bus Red Line (Kawaguchi Line) from Kawaguchiko Station to the Yuransen Ropeway Iriguchi stop. The journey takes about 15 minutes. Alternatively, walk from Kawaguchiko Station, which also takes about 15–20 minutes.
When to get there
The ropeway operates every day from mid-morning until early evening. The sky is typically clearer in the morning, depending on the season, so go as early as you can to beat the clouds rolling across the mountain. Between June and September, the weather can be cloudy or rainy much of the time, so don’t be disappointed if there are no mountain views.
Take a wilder ride at Fuji-Q Highland
If you (or your kids) are seeking a more exhilarating ride in the shadow of Mt. Fuji, check out the Fuji-Q Highland amusement park in Fujiyoshida, near Fujikawaguchiko. This popular park has several roller coasters, haunted houses (including a haunted hospital), and small child-friendly attractions, too. If you dare, keep your eyes open at the top of the rides for Fuji views.
