How to get there

Mt. Machinchang (and the Machinchang Cambrian Geoforest Park) sit in the west of Langkawi, about a 20-mile (32-kilometer) drive from Kuah. With no public transport on the island, your easiest way to reach the cable car station and the mountain is to self-drive, join a tour, hire a driver, or negotiate with a local taxi.

When to get there

The Langkawi Cable Car and the Panorama Complex are open from morning until early evening. It’s worth timing your visit to avoid Malaysian public holidays, the Lunar New Year period, and weekends.

Hiking Mt. Raya (Gunung Raya)

Many travelers looking for a more classic mountain experience follow their Mt. Machinchang trip with a visit to Mt. Raya (Gunung Raya) in the center of the island. At 2,890 feet (881 meters), it’s the tallest mountain on Langkawi. Drive or hike an 8-mile (13-kilometer) paved road, or climb 4,287 stairs through the trees. An elevator at the top offers dramatic island views.
