POINT OF INTEREST

Mt. Otemanu

Bora Bora, Bora Bora

Mt. Otemanu is a jagged, green-sided mountain in the center of the island of Bora Bora. The volcanic mountain is visible from across the island. Visitors can admire the mountain from a boat, or explore the base of the mountain on a rigorous guided hike.

The Basics

Mt. Otemanu is one of two peaks on Bora Bora (along with Mt. Pahia). You can climb up Otemanu, but the actual summit has never been scaled. Experienced hikers can explore the base of the mountain in the company of a guide, and you can also explore the lower parts of the mountain in a 4-wheel-drive vehicle or see it from above on a helicopter tour.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Visitors can only hike the mountain in the company of a guide.

  • The hike of Mt. Otemanu is very strenuous and is best-suited for active travelers who do not suffer from a fear of heights.

  • If you’re heading out on a catamaran tour, consider bringing waterproof sandals, a hat, and sunscreen.

  • A helicopter tour will also take you over the heart-shaped island of Tupai, so don’t forget your camera.

How to Get There

Mt. Otemanu is located in the center of the island and can be reached by car or scooter. There are very few taxis on the island. Many boat tours (with mountain views) will pick up passengers at their resorts; similarly, many helicopter tours will pick you up at your resort’s heli-pad.

When to Get There

Peak season in Bora Bora runs from May to October. If you’re planning to walk around the base of the mountain, head out early in the day, when the weather is at its coolest.

Visit the Lagoonarium

Bora Bora’s Lagoonarium is part natural lagoon, part aquarium—an area of ocean sectioned off where local species thrive in a natural habitat. Located on a small motu (islet) just east of the main island, the Lagoonarium is home to a variety of animals, from black-tip sharks to stingrays. Unlike traditional aquariums, where you see the animals behind glass, this is an immersive experience: visitors take a guided snorkeling excursion to see the lagoon’s marine life.
