Namib-Naukluft National Park
Swakopmund, Namibia
Namib-Naukluft National Park is a place of extremes—vibrant orange dunes stand tall against an endless blue sky, and strangely twisted trees cut across the landscapes. Visitors flock to stare down at the wild Atlantic Ocean from the top of the highest dunes in the world, and wildlife lovers will be shocked by the diversity of flora and fauna in this harsh environment.
The basics
The largest game park in Africa, Namib-Naukluft National Park is a favorite for those seeking adventure. Tours typically highlight a specific section of the park–the Sossusvlei salt pan, Naukluft Mountains, and Sesriem Canyon are popular spots. Opt for a classic safari experience or explore in your own vehicle for more flexibility. Watch for other visitors surfing down the towering dunes as you drive.
Things to know before you go
Bring plenty of water. The desert may be cool in the morning but heats up fast.
Don’t head off-road into the soft sand unless your vehicle is 4WD and on a marked trail.
Wear close-toed shoes–when the sand heats up, you don’t want any in your shoes!
Don’t forget your sunglasses to protect yourself from any sand blowing across the desert.
How to get there
Due to its size, the part is divided into four main sections, each with its own entrance gate. From Windhoek, it’s a four-hour drive to the Sesriem gate–you can take the B1 to the town of Rehoboth, turn onto the C24 to Namibgrens, and finally take the C24 to the town of Solitaire. From Swakopmund, it takes 1.5 hours to drive south to Walvis Bay and take the C14 to the Namib-Naukluft gate.
When to get there
May to October is the cooler season when there’s a welcome respite from the desert heat. Those looking to hike and explore should aim to get to the park early in the morning to avoid the worst of the heat and make it to the tops of the dunes before the sun's peak. The gates open early so you can make the most out of your time.
Dune surfing
After the challenge of climbing the shifting sand of the dunes, there’s no better way to celebrate than with an exhilarating ride down. Strap on some goggles and grab your board–surfing down these towering dunes is an unmissable experience. Many tours offer a choice between sitting and standing when you’re surfing, so there’s an option for everyone.
